The Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF) has assumed management of the jetties in port Soufriere.
The main dock, a boardwalk facility, the Fisheries Complex Unit, and now a smaller pier located on the Hummingbird Beach in Soufriere, are all under the management of the SRDF.
“What we want ultimately is to make certain that port Soufriere is safe with proper facilities, and that the tourism industry is preserved,” Operations Manager, Franklin Solomon said.
A project which commenced last year with the goal to fully refurbish the Hummingbird Beach jetty was projected to be completed in two phases. The second phase of the project came to fruition on Feb. 20.
The scope of works developed by the Ministry of Infrastructure, included the removal of surface boards, concrete reinforcement and the placing of floor planks. Furthermore, a staffing booth was also constructed for the housing of security personnel and the facilitation of docking fee collection.
Mr. Solomon said that a Hummingbird Beach project which started five years ago will also be resumed. The beach project will create an avenue for locals, and will help make the beach a popular spot for visitors and locals to intermingle.
“The beach project will incorporate a restaurant, changing rooms, a venue with a stage and gazebo for events such as weddings, concerts or other social activities and water sports among others” he said, while the jetty project aims to provide direct access to the beach in a safe and properly managed framework.
The SRDF together with the Soufriere community, saw the need to ensure proper beaching facilities.
